Groundhog Day

On February 2d, celebrations of Groundhog Day try to predict the onset of spring when groundhogs are said to denote if there will be six more weeks of winter weather or an early spring by whether the animals see their shadow upon emerging from their dens. One of the most famous celebrations takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil is the star weather forecaster. Said to have started here in 1886, the first celebration took place at Gobbler's Knob (in Sportsman's Park) in 1887.
